Memorial Day weekend in Maine
Maine has always been very high on my list of places that I’ve wanted to visit, so my boyfriend and I decided to take advantage of this past 3 day weekend and finally take the drive up there. Needless to say, it was just as beautiful as I imagined it would be. I can’t possibly begin to write down every single thing that we did but I will try my best to compact it all into a few paragraphs. Even though we were only there for three short days we managed to do A LOT and luckily the weather was on our side two out of the three days. There were some clouds here and there but the blue sky peeked through just enough and the sun was shining as we drove along the coast in York. The windows were all the way down and we got to breathe in the salty air. The drive was perfect, the sun was sparkling on the water, and people were out and about walking their dogs, jogging and strolling along the beach. There was just an all around good vibe and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
We continued driving through York and ended up stopping to visit the Nubble Lighthouse, which was so beautiful! One of my favorite parts about Maine is the fact that there are lighthouses everywhere. I am a huge lighthouse fan and to be honest we found the Nubble Lighthouse by accident, but I am so happy we did. This wasn’t planned and we really didn’t even know it existed but noticed it in the distance while driving through York and had to make our way over to check it out…definitely worth it.
We had a lovely Airb&b booked in Portland, which is about a 6-hour drive from where we live on Long Island. This Airb&b was a beautiful brick house with lots of windows that was built in 1835 and had tons of character. There was lots of natural light, which was my favorite part. Our bedroom had four big windows, which gave the room that beautiful golden glow in the morning. It was super cozy with a big comfy bed, vintage furniture and a fireplace. Our hosts even had a vase of freshly cut lilacs from their garden waiting for us in our room. Lilacs are one of my favorite flowers and they filled the entire space with their sweet smell. Whenever we book an Airb&b we always try to go with the places that are a bit older. They always have their own individual charm and story to tell. Over the past couple of years we have stayed in quite a few older homes, but this one was probably one of our favorites.
After finally getting our stuff settled in our new little home for the weekend we hopped back into the car and headed over to the Portland Head light. This was one of the places that I absolutely had to visit while we were in Portland. Having always seen this lighthouse in photos, I couldn’t wait to finally see it in person. It was actually a bit smaller than I had expected but it was still beautiful and did not disappoint. It’s set atop a steep rocky cliff that overlooks Casco Bay in the Gulf of Maine. It looks beautiful from every angle but I liked that there were several little (steep) paths that you could follow down to get a better view.
Despite the two of us being completely exhausted from the long drive and a little sunburnt, we decided to grab a bite to eat (no, it wasn’t lobster, we both don’t like it! Ha-ha) and do a little more exploring. Our last stop of the day was in South Portland and yes, it was indeed another lighthouse. This one was the Portland Breakwater Light, which is also known as the Bug light. The Bug Light itself is super small but is located in a spacious park that has beautiful views of Portland Harbor. This was the perfect spot to relax and unwind after our long day of driving. We headed back to our cozy Airb&b and got a good nights’ sleep so we would be energized for the next day at Acadia National Park. Acadia is an absolutely gorgeous place and deserves it's own blog post so i'll be posting all about it soon. Stay tuned!
